History
Also known as World Peace Day, the United Nations passed a unanimous resolution in the year 1981 which was jointly sponsored by the United Kingdom and Costa Rica. It was in 2001 when the date was decided to be September 21. Not only the benefits of world peace discussed but a 24-hour period of global ceasefire and non-violence is also advocated especially for groups who are in active conflict with each other.
Significance
Over a long period of time, we have seen on several occasions how pointless violence has only destroyed countries and their future. However, everyone has also witnessed the power of world peace and what it can achieve. Peace is possible and it is upon us to ensure the same around the world.
Theme
This year, the day's theme is 'Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World.' Peace cannot just be ensured by resolving any violent conflict and combat. It is made sure by creating an equal, just, and sustainable world around us as well. COVID-19 turned everything upside down in the past year. As we are slowly recovering from it, the process is tedious yet possible. It is absolutely imperative to ensure that the new world that we enter post-pandemic is not just equal in several ways, but is healthier as well.
